The Muslim Society of PEI was founded in 1990 to serve the needs of the growing Muslim community in Prince Edward Island (now around 250-300 people).
The Muslim Society has been working towards the establishment, in several phases, of an Islamic Centre (which would include a prayer hall, classrooms, and a function hall). This decision was made at a meeting of the Muslim community over 18 months ago pursuant to the by-laws of the Muslim Society. The objective of such a Centre will be to better serve the spiritual and social needs of the Muslim community; and to promote a better understanding between Muslims and other religious and cultural groups on the Island .
The Muslim Society of PEI has been actively raising funds for that purpose, and has been studying different options. The Muslim Society has also approached Government to explore ideas, possibilities, and potential solutions.
In the meantime, the Muslim Society has contributed financially to the renovation of a basement in a building owned by S. Hashmi for the purpose of using it as a prayer hall. The Muslim Society considers this place as temporary as it is in a privately owned building that can potentially change hands. In the long term, members of the Muslim community need their own place with more accessibility, for instance, to wheelchair users and others, and which can accommodate the larger number of people who attend congregational prayers that are part of the two festivals of the Muslim calendar.
The Muslim Society did not and does not expect any handout of public funds from Government. The Muslim Society believes that the establishment of the Islamic Centre is the responsibility of the Muslim community, and wants to rely on its own efforts and that of its members to realize this project.
